Ego Does Not Exist

In everyday experience there seems to be something called the “ego.” It comments, judges, and whispers whether things are right or wrong. But does such a thing really exist, or is it just another thought? In this Satsang, Nitya points out that the ego has no separate existence, and what we call “ego” is nothing more than a movement of the mind.

What is ego?

When people speak of the ego, it is often imagined as some inner force that controls thoughts or produces them. It seems as if there is Consciousness, there are thoughts, and in between them stands the “ego”. Nitya reminds us this is only a habitual assumption. The ego does not exist as an independent entity. It is just a single thought – most often the thought “I.” There is no extra layer, no mediator between Consciousness and what appears within it.

In the natural state of mind, various thoughts arise: judging, commenting, pleasant and unpleasant. Yet none of them is “ego.” They are all simply thoughts – like any other object, like a lamp standing in the room.

Highlights of Satsang:

  • Thoughts arise on their own [01:00]

During meditation many comments may appear: a voice saying “this is wonderful,” “this is it,” or, on the contrary, “this is just the ego.” Naturally, the question arises whether such voices mean that the state of peace is lost. Nitya points out that these thoughts are not a problem – they are like any other object in space, elements of the environment that arise by themselves. Consciousness is not dependent on them and does not need the mind to be silent in order to remain whole.

  • The ego is only the thought “I” [03:00]

One of the most common illusions is the belief that there is an additional layer – an ego that releases thoughts and stands between us and Consciousness. But this is an illusion. The ego does not exist as something separate. It is only a thought, most often the thought “I.” Sometimes it is accompanied by tension in the body, which strengthens the feeling of separation. But in essence it is just another object of experience.

“There is no mediator between Consciousness and thoughts.”

When this is seen, the struggle with ego becomes unnecessary, because there is nothing to fight. There is only the flow of thoughts, and one of them carries the name “ego.”

  • The natural state is always present [07:00]

The natural state is often confused with silence in meditation, with the moment when the mind almost reaches zero. But Nitya shows that the natural state of mind is not limited to such moments. It is always here – even when thoughts, emotions, conversations or movement appear.

“The natural state is always present. It does not require us to meditate in a specific position in order to reach some place.”

Meditation can help to recognize it more clearly, but it does not create this state. Realization is simply noticing that one never leaves it, because it is the foundation of everything that unfolds.

Consciousness beyond the ego

Recognizing that the ego does not exist brings relief. There is no need to fight thoughts or try to hold the mind in absolute silence. Thoughts appear and disappear, while Consciousness remains unmoved.

With this discovery, simplicity and clarity begin to show in everyday life. Compassion and understanding arise naturally – not because one tries to be this way, but because that is how the flow moves. It is not the result of effort or personal merit. There is nothing to gain, because it has always been here.

This recognition cannot be contained in words. It is like returning to something that has never been lost – to the presence that sustains every moment.

The natural state does not require effort or a silent mind – it is unceasing. The full course of this Satsang, where the theme unfolds step by step, can be found in the video below.

SATSANG: Communion with Truth

The word Satsang comes from Sanskrit, where "sat" means truth and "sangha" community. Literally translated, it means "being in the company of truth" or "community with truth". In practice, Satsang is not only meetings with others, but above all with ourselves, with our deepest essence. It is a process of discovering what is unchanging, timeless and free in us.
